Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance: Have You Ever Wondered If You're Paying Too Much?

by Daniel Wright

It can be very daunting to try and select the proper type of insurance since there are so many different types available on the market. But what types of issues does accidental death and dismemberment insurance actually cover?

AD&D covers a variety of accident scenarios depending on the policy and the provider. To purchase AD&D you generally do not require a medical before obtaining the policy. Coverage includes all accidents that occur at work, home, or at play. Best of all this type of insurance is very affordable!

The standard benefits generally pay 100% for loss of life, both hands, both feet, entire eye sight, loss of both eyes, one hand and one foot, one hand and one eye, one foot and one eye, speech, hearing both ears, paraplegia and quadriplegia.

50% is generally paid out for loss of one hand, loss of one foot, loss of one eye, loss of speech, hearing, or hemiplegic. While a 25% payout occurs for loss of a thumb and index finger on the same hand, or a variety of other finger combinations.

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance also includes additional benefits such as emergency evacuation and home renovations to accommodate disability. Some other valuable benefits include vehicle modifications as needed and waiver of premiums. Educational retraining and double indemnity for paralysis or dismemberment may be offered as well.

AD&D policies usually provide optional family coverage quite inexpensively. A typical $100,000 AD&D policy costs about $1.80 for one person and about $3.50 per month for a family. Policies are available with maximum coverage amounts ranging from $25,000 to $500,000.

Some exclusions, which are not covered under most accidental death and dismemberment insurance plans, do exist. These plans often do not pay for self-inflicted harm or attempted suicide, involvement in war or serving in the armed forces, or those who work as pilots.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment policies differ: some offer a life insurance payout if death occurs, while others provide strictly benefits. These generally provide a large, one-time payment when death or dismemberment as a result of an accident occurs. For clarification, you should read your policy.

You must be absolutely positive that you file your claim within 365 days of the accident. You must fill out the requested forms completely after you have gotten them from the insurer. Your doctor will need to sign the fully completed forms, and most claims will require the certificate to be signed by your doctor.

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance provides an affordable insurance option for a specific coverage. You'll need to decide if this is the type of coverage that could benefit you.
