by Alan B. Densky, CH

Many people are uncomfortable or experience some degree of anxiousness when thrust into a new situation or a large group of people who are unfamiliar to them. However, for roughly 10 percent of the population, anxiety about social situations can become so severe as to be disabling. Scientists now estimate that a much larger group of people may have to deal with milder forms of social anxieties that can lead to significant issues in daily social interactions.

The term for this kind of anxiety is 'social phobia'. It usually occurs when one experiences fears or worries that usually are caused by being involved in a social event. One who has a social phobia might also struggle to deal with stopping themselves from thinking excessively about how others are passing judgment on or evaluating them.

For people who have social phobia, anxious feelings can happen in many kinds of situations, including going shopping, attending a party, speaking in public, being in front of a group of people, or being interviewed. These kinds of social anxieties can also make themselves visible physically; for many people with social anxiety, sweating, blushing, trembling, or intestinal issues can happen when dealing with these kinds of stress provoking situations.

Leading experts now believe that social phobia involves issues with self confidence. Self confidence is the ability to believe that we are able to make the right decisions, be independent, and take power over our lives. People who have trouble with self confidence -- an extremely common problem in today's modern world -- might worry excessively about how they are perceived, eventually leading to not wanting to take part in social events or of having a sense of feeling 'out of control'.

Fortunately, though, there are some simple actions those who have problems with self confidence issues can take in order to regain this sense of control. One possible action a person who struggles with self confidence issues can take is to use an anxiety and phobia workbook. You can consider the anxiety and phobia workbook as a simple means to gain insight into the issues you are dealing with by maintaining a journal of triggers and mood-related symptoms; there are also exercises to do that will aid you to develop more insightful introspection about your self confidence issues.

When you have come to the point at which you have started to have insight about your issues with self confidence, and have made the decision that it is now time to begin developing self confidence, then it might be time to think about a kind of treatment that has been shown to be extremely successful in social phobia. As with the anxiety and phobia workbook, this special kind of therapy is characterized by having a focus on helping you become pro-active and gain power over your life. In sum, you will be curing yourself.

This type of treatment, called hypnosis, works by taking control of the secret power of your unconscious mind to aid you to become more confident, self-assured, relaxed, and comfortable with yourself. It may be surprising to know that we all come into this world with these abilities, but due to traumatic life events, learned disempowerment, and troubled social interactions, we often lose track of our abilities to seize these powers. Hypnosis therapy has been clinically demonstrated to be useful for people with self confidence and anxiety issues.

Many people who have self confidence and other anxiety-related issues often look for a "quick fix" solution, such as pills, natural products, and short courses of traditional therapy. While these are things that can assist some individuals, they don't actually address the cause of our self confidence issues - our unconscious mind. If you want to deal with self confidence issues, you must be in charge of your own treatment.

If you decide to check out hypnosis therapy to aid you to gain self confidence, you will begin a series of sessions with a hypnotherapist who will encourage you to enter a deep state of calmness. When you are in this deep state of calmness, your unconscious mind is open and ready to be reached by hypnotic suggestion. Your hypnotherapist will then work with you in this open state by using repeated suggestion to aid you to realize that you are an able, strong, and independent person.

Some other possibilities for people who are troubled with problems with self confidence are to receive hypnotherapy through video or audio recordings, which can be watched or listened to in the comfort of your own house.
