Voluntary Benefits And The Advantages They Offer

by Michael Chapman

A lot of employees are already enjoying the usual benefit packages of life, insurance, standard family health insurance, pension or retirement packages, 401ks and more. Although these benefits help to provide a standard level of security and comfort to most full time employees, some workers may want to add supplemental benefits to these.

Voluntary benefits programs are becoming more and more prevalent as an offering for employers to supply to their employees. These programs offer a win-win situations for both employer and employee. The employee has the option of choosing which benefits are most applicable and desirous for them. The employer then doesn't have to pay for benefits that a worker doesn't want.

Accident insurance is one of the more popular voluntary benefits offered by employers. Accident insurance has been brought to the public eye through advertising by companies such as Colonial Insurance and Aflac. This insurance helps cover expenses above and beyond medical insurance, in the event an employee must miss work because of an injury.

Especially for people working in hazardous / life-risking conditions, it is good to have a supplemental insurance plan. This insurance can cover for the basic household expenses like utilities, mortgages, food, etc. in a situation when the insured is unable to work due to an accident or injury that may have occurred at the work place. Colonial Insurance and Aflac are some of those who offer this kind of insurance plan.

Several voluntary benefits may be offered to employees at the work site. These benefits include: heart/stroke insurance, cancer insurance, vision & dental insurance programs. If the employee's family has a history of such diseases, these benefits may be especially important. Since employers typically pay administrative costs, such programs can also be beneficial to the employers, as well as the employees.

In the ever more competitive global economy, where employers are searching for anyway possible to stay competitive, offering worksite marketing of voluntary benefits to employees helps the employer to provide the kind of coverage that is best for each employee. Because of this voluntary benefits from companies like Colonial Insurance and AFLAC are quickly on the rise and will continue to become more and more popularized in the years to come.

The typical benefits package includes health and life insurance and retirement plans. One type of benefit that is often added supplementally under voluntary benefits is accident insurance. This type of insurance is good especially for the type of person who works in a dangerous occupation, lifting the burden of fear that they will not be able to cover the bills if they are injured due to work. Companies like AFLAC and Colonial Insurance have been spearheading the movement towards these types of fringe benefits and it is likely that these benefits will only become more popular over time.
