Web Strategy: Mutual Links And Other Concepts

by Sean Dilea

These days, when almost everyone is online, the internet nearly always has to be a major consideration in the planning for a company startup. There is no other means to access as many customers, and an effective plan for internet marketing is a boon to all areas of your business: marketing, sales, even administration.

Marketing involves two basic elements; having a product or service that consumers desire to purchase, and having a way to deliver that product or service. The means of delivering can vary, such as using the web, or producing the product in a factory, a cottage industry, or through the use of experts. What matters most is people desire to buy into the product or service.

Traditional marketing techniques and good web strategy both suggest finding a niche. It is important to find a place where your product is unique and will be appealing to the demographic. For example, a product designed for left handed people or services targeted at moms re-entering their careers, both have a specific target group. A base that wants your product or service and finding a way to make contact with them makes good financial sense.

A web marketing thus has to have a "what" to promote, a "who" who will want it and then must develop a "how" to put it into practice. There should be a business plan in place with a budget for advertising needs to determine what can be expended. Many will choose to use automated ads that pop up or are displayed on related content websites as a means to advertise, but this alone is rarely enough.

A particularly cost effective approach is mutual linking with other websites which display related merchandise or services but not those with which you are in direct competition. Professional associations and trade associations may be of assistance with this form of online marketing. And since their membership fees are almost always tax deductible, this should not prove to be a major financial hit.

One way to draw visitors to your website is to provide content about and "around" your product. Selling sports gear? Make it clear that you're a fellow sports fan. Talk about sports, report interesting sports news stories, rehash last night's game. This is basic marketing strategy as well as basic web marketing strategy. Just don't get so involved with chatting with your customers that you forget to sell them anything""don't put your "Buy Now" button at the bottom of a long page.

Any web strategy requires attracting large numbers of visitors to your site. The trick is in getting the right visitors! You don't want to trick or mislead people into coming to your site, nor do you want your advertisements to be so poorly worded that people come looking for something entirely different. The basic web strategy for getting potential customers to your site involves the judicious use of key words that people might use when searching for your product.
